All international participants of the IDEA Debate Exchange have now left Sofia. After the final day of the Exchange on Monday the 1st, and sightseeing for some on the 2nd of August, the event is now over. The Exchange ended with a day full of practice: some practiced organising a tournament, others judging, debating or giving workshops. Still others discussed a new plan for cooperation: an international knowledge academy for debate. The debate topics were on responsibilities towards refugees, the international protection of lgbti rights and how to punish economic crimes committed by the poor. All was wrapped up in a final and a party afterwards. Now, it is up to the participants to take what they have learned to new people and places.Sofia has been a great city to host the event in, and a very enjoyable place to stay. The participants’ enthusiasm, the city’s great parks and the Exchange’s great atmosphere has made this a wonderful event. The participants are taking the lessons they learned back with them to their debate societies and their countries’ organisations, building on European networks and knowledge from other countries. They returned home energised and full of new ideas and with newfound friends from all over Europe. Some of the results can be found in our photo album and on the website. Other results should become apparent in the next month, as we will hopefully see more cooperation projects between different countries, more debate workshops within countries and more debaters participate in international events. We have already started looking into new possibilities to host the IDEA Debate Exchange in 2017 and are looking forward to the results coming up.This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
