Hackney Community College Debate Club awarded grant from Hackney Giving

The debate club at Hackney Community College has been awarded a grant by the local grant maker the East End Community Foundation. The grant is to create and develop the club at the college which runs for a couple of hours every Wednesday afternoon teaching debate to disadvantaged young people.

The debate club is one of numerous similar debate clubs that IDEA UK is in the process of setting up for young people in schools and further education colleges (post 16 education) across London.  Each club is a part of the World Debate Club, a project which teaches a range of key skills; logical reasoning, critical thinking, research, public speaking and active listening in an engaging way.

Improving skills and the increased chances of getting a job that results from it is however not the only benefit of bringing debating to young people from deprived areas. There are a range of rather softer benefits such as increasing empathy and tolerance as well as encouraging citizenship so countering the political apathy that is particularly prominent among young people in deprived areas.

The grant will enable the Debate Club in Hackney Community College to run throughout this academic year and will fund taking part in competitions. These will take place both with other clubs around London and internationally in partnership with other parts of the IDEA network.

You can sign up to take part in our debate clubs at http://idebate.org/uk/sign-debate-club

As we start more clubs we are looking for more volunteers to help run the clubs. If you are interested, you can find our more and sign up at http://idebate.org/uk/make-difference-debate-club-coach

The East End Community Foundation is dedicated to increasing opportunities for people living in London's East End by funding grass roots organisations and working with local people, businesses, charities and public bodies to raise educational achievement, enhance employability and increase social cohesion.

The Hackney Giving grant is an initiative of Hackney CVS and EECF to encourage local giving in Hackney. The idea is to bring together residents, businesses and philanthropists to support Hackney’s grassroots charities.

Part of the grant we were given comes from Allen & Overy an international law firm based in London with 44 offices in 31 countries.
