EU-China Debate Tournament

A unique tournament took place at the Beijing Foreign Studies University as 32 European and 32 Chinese debaters formed mixed teams in the EU-China Youth Debate Tournament in September. The event was held as part of the EU-China Year of Youth and coincided with BFSU's 80th anniversary.

The speakers were invited on the basis of their performance at the European Universities Debating Championships. Participants came from Austria, England, Estonia, Germany, Ireland, Israel, Latvia, the Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Scotland, Serbia and Turkey.

The tournament was eventually won by team Euros Chow Mein, made up of Manos Moschopoulos (University of Athens) and Yiaming Zhang (Fudan University). The other finalists were teams World Treasury Fund (Georgie Barker & Gao Tian), Marco? (John Beechinor & Wen Chaoying) and The Empire Strikes Back (James Hardy & Pan Xiangxue).

The best speaker was Scott Ralston (Oxford), followed by Manos Moschopoulos, Jeroen Heun (Erasmus) and James Hardy (Cambridge). The best Chinese speaker was Pan Xiangxue, followed by Zhu Yangbo and Wen Chaoying.

During the event some of the participants participated in CCTV English's 'Global Debate' TV show and debated on the subject of social networks.
