Debating Across Borders begins

Debating across borders

The students have arrived, and the taping has begun: Debating Across Borders is underway in New Orleans.

Eight undergraduate students from France, Slovenia, Australia, Colombia, USA (2),Turkey and Canada have arrived at Loyola University for the first debate in a unique international program by IDEA and OSF to get young people to see the world from another point of view.

Today the students got the motion for the debate - "Ethnic Profiling is a Justified Means of Combating Terrorism". They'll be guided by experts, studying at the university's top library - and are being filmed every step along the way.

Loyola University has been a feature of academic life in New Orleans for almost a hundred years. After Hurricane Katrina struck, and temporarily closed the university down, students were relocated to more than 400 other colleges and universities - mostly free of charge. When Loyola reopened it had lost 40% of its student body. Now Loyola is thriving again, and its the perfect setting for the start of 'Debating Across Borders'.

We'll be reporting on the progress of the students, and giving more information about each team, as the weekend progresses. You'll be able to find all our info here;
