NATO is an Alliance that consists of 28 independent member countries from Europe, including Turkey and North America it was founded in 1949 at the start of the cold war to protect member countries from outside aggression. Members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization currently have very large armed forces. The military threat posed to these countries, however, has diminished since the end of the cold war in 1989, and the current economic recession underlines the strain that the armed forces put on their governments. European member countries currently contribute a lot to NATO's armed forces, but they also have the power of the United States to rely on. Should NATO members retain their large forces for security, or alternatively reduce their armed forces?
