Malawi debating festival

Here is a very worthy cause. I have been in contact with Kate for the past few years and she is doing outstanding work promoting debating in Malawi. If you can help her in any way it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks & Regards,

Mzuzu Academy, in Malawi, will host a debating festival for the Northern Region's high school students in October. It will be a weekend-long event, involving workshops and a competition. The festival is modelled on a project from Zimbabwe, aiming to get students and debate facilitators together, to improve their skills and make links with each other.

So far, support has been offered from Zimbabwe and Botswana with regard to running the workshops and mentoring Malawian university debaters working with schools. The English Speaking Union has sent teaching materials and prizes, and individuals have also pledged over $1,000.

The festival will be used as a platform to launch a national network of debating schools in Malawi, including the creation of a national team, for which we hope to have the funds and skills to compete internationally.

We really need international support though. Malawi is at a crucial point in in its development with regard to free speech and civic participation, yet funds are painfully scarce. For more information, please watch this short video at :
