IDEA London seeks interns

The London head office of the International Debate Education Association, part of a global network dedicated to inspiring informed discussion through teaching debate to young people in over 50 countries around the world, is seeking interns for the summer 2012 period to assist the organisation in achieving its goals.
IDEA offices around the world implement youth-centred programs and initiatives, with a special focus on developing young people’s civic skills, empowerment of young people (particularly young people from disadvantaged and marginalized backgrounds), engaging young people in community and building trust between young people and the authorities. IDEA provides trainings, develops curricula, organises events and provides assistance and support to national and local youth and debate initiatives.
All positions are based in Shoreditch, London EC2, near Old Street and Liverpool Street underground and National Rail stations. IDEA will cover reasonable expenses, including travel and lunches.
The positions are:
- Arabic Programmes Intern
- Russian Language Content Intern
- Debatabase Interns
- UK Programmes Intern
The deadline for all positions is May 30 and interviews will happen on a rolling basis as applications come in, so we encourage candidates to apply early. Arabic Programmes Intern
We are looking for an intern who will be working from our office in London supporting IDEA’s engagement with the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. The intern will be expected to:
- Assist with the localisation and translation of current idebate.org content
- Assist with the creation of new MENA-specific content for our Arabic website
- Assist with the identification of potential partners in the MENA region
- Assist with training programmes in the MENA region
Russian Language Content Intern
We are looking for an intern who will be working from our office in London supporting IDEA’s established programmes in Russia and the Russian-speaking populations in the former CIS states. The intern will be expected to:
- Assist with the localisation and translation of current idebate.org content
- Assist with the creation of new CIS- and Russia-specific content for our Russian website
- Assist with training programmes in the former CIS
Debatabase Interns
We are looking for interns who will be working from our office in London supporting the continuing development of the Debatabase, an online resource of arguments on idebate.org. The intern will be expected to:
- Identify an area of expertise from our list at idebate.org/debatabase
- Create Debatabase content within his/her own area of expertise
- Find curators for Debatabase content within his/her area
- Generate discussions on idebate.org on his/her area
UK Programmes Intern
We are looking for an intern who will be working from our office in London supporting our UK debating programmes. The intern will be expected to:
- Assist with building a network of partner institutions in the United Kingdom
- Assist with the formation of new projects aiming to achieve societal goals through debating
- Assist with training programmes in the United Kingdom and Europe
- Assist with the creation of online content to promote debating globally.
Minimum qualifications for all positions
- The candidates must be either currently studying at a university towards a degree or have at least an undergraduate degree.
- The candidates must have an excellent command of the English language. Any other languages, particularly Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French or Spanish, will be considered a plus.
The applicants for the Arabic Programmes position must have an excellent command of the Arabic language. The applicants for the Russian Language Content position must have an excellent command of the Russian language. - A background in debating, competitive, organising, or coaching, will be considered a plus.
- Experience in blogging or other online content editing will be considered a plus.
- The successful candidate must have the right to work in the United Kingdom.
The starting date for all posts is early June, with a minimum commitment of three months. The working hours and commitment per week are flexible.
