Chennai to host WUDC 2014
Submitted by Colm Flynn on 11 June 2012
Chennai have beaten Chula in the race to host the World Universities Debating Championships. The final vote was 55-36 with one Abstaining and 5 nations did not vote. Congratulations to Chennai. The first Worlds in India and I'm sure they will do a fantastic job.
Here is the mail from Chair of Council Steve Johnson
Members of Council,
I am pleased to congratulate the representatives of Rajalakshmi Engineering College of Chennai, India on their successful bid for the opportunity to host the 2014 Worlds Universities Debating Championships. The representatives to Council selected the Chennai bid by a vote of 55 to 36, with one abstention. I also want to offer my most sincere gratitude to the representatives of Chulalongkorn University of Bangkok, Thailand for their outstanding bid. The distinguishing feature of this decision--apart from it being delayed by six months--was that whatever the outcome, I had full confidence that we would have an excellent event. I very much look forward to the 2014 tournament. As is tradition, the record of each nation's vote is available for your review. Please remember that Status A nations receive 4 votes; Status B nations receive 3 votes; Status C nations receive 2 votes and Status D nations receive 1 vote. The Council executive decided that any nation who did not participate in Council in Manila would not be allowed to register a vote in this decision. The rationale for this decision was that we were considering the bids under a special extension passed by Council in Manila by those nations who were present. Moreover, we were concerned that we would not be able to verify representatives who did not participate in Manila. I wish Chennai the best as they now begin the real work of preparing to welcome the world to India. I look forward, particularly, to their report to Council in Berlin on their progress. Again, my thanks to all who worked so hard to prepare their bids and to all the members of Council for their patience as this unfolded. Best, Steve Steven Johnson, ChairWorld Universities Debating Council
