The Sociedade de Debates Académicos de Lisboa (short: SDAL; Lisbon Academic Debate Society) is a union of students from various Universities - Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade Técnica de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Universidade Católica Portuguesa - located in Lisbon, that has been committed over the last two years (since 19th November 2010) to bring constructive arguing to all students who want to be more proactive in their academic and social spheres.

Starting as a group of friends that enjoyed having discussions about crucial contemporary matters and wanted to widen the scope of debate perspectives, SDAL started growing and attracting a larger group of interested individuals, without losing its key founding ideal, which is the necessity of constructive arguing to a society that is fatigued of lesser argumentation.

Considering our debate model, which follows the British Parliamentary Debate rules, we became the 2nd Debate Institution acting in Portugal. Consequently we started to interact with colleagues, professors (as well as all of the University staff) interested in the project, for instance through weekly debates either at Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa (Faculty of Law, University of Lisbon) or at Instituto Superior de Economia e Gestão (School of Economics and Business, Technical University of Lisbon).

The events have occurred in different locations, following another of our founding ideals, which is to have students from such different areas of studies (from Dance to Archaeology, from Agronomy to Medicine) sharing their different knowledges and opinions. This way, all of us can learn with each other, constructing solid points of view about a plurality of multidisciplinary issues - such as Democracy, Human Rights, Globalization, not only in our country but also all over the World - that affect contemporary societies in all the fields, sometimes in uncertain and unpredictable ways. Before these question-marks, it is crucial to encourage young people to succeed nowadays. Recognising this urgency, SDAL contributes, gathering students from our country to debate, conscious that is an unique opportunity to step in today’s global problems, because it provides the essential discussion about the reasons behind the decisions.

Currently we are working on the upcoming Lisboa Open, to be held during the 102nd celebrations of the Portuguese Republic (5th to 7th October), with the participation of 70 students from various universities, Tornadu 2013 - the national championship -, a new and innovative internal league (Terramotu), conferences and workshops, radio broadcasted debates.
