Karl Popper Czech Debate Association (Asociace debatních klubů, o.s.; ADK), established 1999, is a non-governmental, non-profit civic association. It has been established with the aim of promotion of spiritual values, humanitarian goals and advancement of education and culture in the Czech Republic. In its activities the ADK is backed by Sir Popper's idea of building-up an open society, one being characterised by freedom and responsibility, democracy and peace. The aim of the ADK is to - through entertaining competitive debates - educate young people in the Czech Republic and to lead them is such a way that K. Popper's ideals would become their norm in building up both their own personalities and the whole society as well. Debate competitions are not a goal but rather a means in fulfilling this popularly desirable goal.
ADK is a member of international debate organizations – IDEA and WSDC Ltd.
The ADK programs concentrate on secondary schools and can be divided as follows:
a) The program for talented youth is aimed at secondary students with particular interest in debating and run in the Karl Popper format in Czech and English. In the “Debate League”, there are 4 preliminary tournaments and a final tournament organized each season, in various places around the country. In the “Debate Cup”, teams get points for every debate judged by a qualified adjudicator. In the 2011-2012 debate season, we had 377 debates among 25 debate clubs registered in both competitions. The 17th annual debate season has just started.
b) Roma Debate League, is a program aimed at inclusion of the Roma. Roma Debate League is dependent on government funding, as the participants come from low-income families that can’t afford the tournament registration fees.
c) Debating across the Curiculla project, subsidized by the European Union, aims to bring debating to schools as a method of education. The project consists of “Debate Days” at various schools all around the country, with introduction into debating followed by a mini-tournament. Debate Days attracted 3000 students and 350 teachers so far.
All ADK activities are organized by volunteers, of which more than 60 are well trained judges with accreditation. Vast majority of the judges and volunteers are young people under 30.
Czech debaters, judges and coaches represent their country in debate competitions abroad. The National Team is sent to the World Schools Debate Championships every year since 1995. Our debaters won the World Online Debating Championships 2012 and (as the first non-US team) the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF) 2011-12.
