Where do other religions (apart from Christianity) stand on abortion?
Where do other religions (apart from Christianity) stand on abortion?
It is not just in Christian countries where abortion can cause controversy. In Turkey Prime Minister Erdoğan sparked outrage last month when he said that abortion is murder saying “Either you kill a baby in the mother’s stomach or you kill the baby after the birth. There is no difference.” Later he went on to equate a botched military operation that resulted in the massacre of 34 Kurds with abortion. Fears are also being raised that the ruling AKP party will introduce legislation to restrict abortion or even prevent it completely. Abortion up until the 10th week of pregnancy has been legal in Turkey since 1983 and has generally been uncontroversial. This might be because Islam is more permissive than Christianity on the issue. Ihsan Özkes a retired mufti argues “The Quran does not contain any direct statement regarding abortion. It only says that "Allah breathes his spirit into man." However, we do not know exactly when this occurs.” The suggestion is therefore that Erdoğan is simply using the issue for political ends in order to divert attention from the massacre towards a religious and health issue which would appeal to conservatives.
I am interested how do other cultures and religions apart from Christianity deal with abortion, is it allowed, discouraged or banned?

Brother....I just Loved your comment. I'm a Muslim and hence, I might be able to answer as to whether abortion is legal in Islam. The Quran says, "If anyone kills any other human being, unless it be for murder, or for spreading corruption in the land, it is as if he has killed the whole of humanity. And if anyone saves any other human being, it is as if he has saved the whole of humanity."(Surah al Maidah)
Allah says in the Glorious Qur’an “...kill not your children on a plea of want; We provide sustenance for you and for them;” (Al-Qur’an 6:151)
“Kill not your children for fear of want: We shall provide sustenance for them as well as for you: verily the killing of them is a great sin.” (Al-Qur’an 17:31)
However, if an abortion can save the life of the mother, then the matter is a bit controversial. Hope that answers your question. :)

That is interesting thank you.
All of them however leave the question of when life starts completely open so potentially leaving the question of abortion open.
I think the second quote is particularly interesting “...kill not your children on a plea of want; We provide sustenance for you and for them;” as it rules out abortion for those who are in poor circumstances and fear they will not be able to bring up the child (though of course a decent welfare state should do that anyway it is still often used as a reason).

“Take not life which Allah has made sacred” (6:151). As you said very correctly, the question is, When does life begin? However, the Quran kind of rules this out. Says Allah in the Qur’an: “So set you your face steadily and truly to the Faith: (Establish) Allah’s handiwork according to the pattern on which He has made humankind: no change (let there be) in the work (wrought) by Allah: that is the standard Religion: but most among mankind understand not.” (Al-Qur’an 30:30)-Translation taken by Abdullah Yusuf Ali. This verse actually rules out the concept of both, contraception and Abortion in Islam, since if we look at the pattern by which God has made humankind, it is as follows, according to the Quran: -
We created man from an essence of clay: then placed him, a living germ,
In a secure enclosure. The germ We made a leech; and the leech a lump of
Flesh; and this We fashioned into bones, then clothed the bones with flesh;
Then We develop it into another creation. (Surah Al-Mu'minoon, 23: 12-14)
Hence, if we carry out contraception or abortion, some stage "of God's pattern" will be disrupted and so, the action would contradict the Islamic verses. However, coitus interruptus is perfectly allowed in Islam according to the followind Hadeeth:
Jabir (RA) said: “We used to practice (‘Azl) coitus interruptus during the days when the Qur’an was being revealed”. (Sahih Bukhari vol. 7, Hadith no. 136)
Hope that clarifies it all. :)

I guess it does to an extent. It does of course however leave the usual problem when discussing religion; that if we cannot know Gods pattern then how do we know that he does not want us to use abortion or contraception? Essentially it provides a fallback position for both sides of the debate to say that God is inscrutable so own interpretation is the correct interpretation.
I take it that in practice most islamic states ban both abortion and contraception then? (with Turkey as an exception)

Your last sentence was absolutely brilliant, the question asked by many many people. The thing is that, Turkey is not an Islamic state, it is a Muslim state(This would seem confusing but...the next few lines r gonna clarify it out),
A Muslim state is a state in which the majority of the people are Muslims(99.8% of the total population of Turkey is Muslim)
An Islamic state is a state in which the Shariah is completely followed. However, in Turkey, the Shariah is not "completely" followed. Thus, Turkey is a secular state.
However, even in Turkey, debates are being held in the Turkish Parliament, which may result in banning abortion- Hence, Turkey may become closer to becoming an Islamic state. Hope that answers the questions. :)

Sorry, it was what in speech would be a 'slip of the tongue', I am aware that Turkey is a secular state (as are some others like Syria). I meant to say states in the 'Islamic world' in order to be inclusive of all states where muslims are the majority of the population. Though that said another interesting angle would be if there is a difference between states that are islamic and those that are secular - in the west the answer I am pretty sure is that there is no difference - supposedly 'christian' states like Britain can be more liberal than 'secular' states like the US.

it was definetely banned! well actually no matter what religion we believe, even in your religion allow to do "that" but if we see from humanity point of view, that was criminalization, it was a murder..

Im a christian abortion is a huge sin because you are not only killing an innocent child, but a temple of god.
