Eastern European Roma in the EU

Compiled in the context of the recent Roma evictions from France and Italy, and the launch of EU's Platform for Roma inclusion, this volume addresses the pressing issue of the so-called "Roma problem" in the EU. With contributions from established scholars in Romani studies, such as Zoltan Barany, Maria Spirova, and Vera Messing, the volume focuses on four main themes:

• The Roma of Central and Eastern Europe: historical context and current treatment
• The Roma and the EU accession process: funding, migration, discrimination
• Roma political mobilization: opportunities for political participation
• Assessment of solutions to the so-called Roma problem: assessing Roma rights, school integration, housing inclusion and employment activation

Anca Pusca is Senior Lecturer in International Studies at Goldsmiths University of London and is a founding member of the Center for the Study of the Balkans. Her research interests include minority and migration issues, EU enlargement, post-communist transitions and cultural and aesthetic political interventions.
